OBJETS DE TOILETTE

1. Marvis Whitening Toothpaste $13.50
2. Barr-co Soap $8
3. Botot Mouthwash $13
4. Numerical Toothbrushes $10.66
5. Mason Pearson Hair Brush $120

I'm a total sucker for pretty toiletries. If it's useful and has beautiful packaging, then why not? As I get older I'm more and more into simplifying. I'd rather have less, but the things I do have I want to love. Don't you agree?

PS. I've had that Mason Pearson brush since I was six years old and guess what, it's still going strong. Yes it's worth the investment. As a child my mom was wise enough to paint my name on it with nail polish. Between sleepovers and school camping trips, I have a feeling that's why It never went missing.

SWEET. SWEETER. SWEETEST.

Sweeter. Silk Flowerveil Top $135

Happy Monday! I'm loving all three of these silk tops from Madewell. Such interesting patterns and colors. I could see myself wearing each one come fall. Which is your favorite?

How was your weekend? Mine was spent mostly running errands and trying to get my life organized again after being away. It was completely worth taking the week off for my birthday, but  now I'm paying for it with a major to-do list.

HAPPY WEEKEND

I realize it's not quite the weekend, but I've decided to take tomorrow off and recover from our amazing trip. Our time in New York was a whirlwind in the best of ways, but now I'm looking forward to nothing more than reading through your sweet birthday wishes, looking at all the fashion week photos and getting some much needed sleep.
Happy Weekend! xo

BIRTHDAY THOUGHTS

Today is my 30th birthday and I can truly say I couldn't be happier to be entering this new decade. Maybe it's because many of my friends are older than me. Maybe it's because my parents didn't meet until their 30's. Or maybe it just feels like the beginning.

My 20's // Honestly, my 20's were difficult. There was lots of heartbreak both personally and  professionally, that I wasn't equipped to deal with. I have also struggled with depression, which added a dark cloud over many of those years. It wasn't until my late 20's that I really got a handle on my sadness, started to gain confidence and figured out what I wanted from life. As soon as I started scaring myself by taking risks and putting myself out there in life and love, wonderful things started to take shape.

Love // James and I started dating when I was 27 and he was 28 and there is no way either one of us would have been ready for each other a year sooner. We both tried to keep our relationship as a friendship for six months before we finally gave in to falling in love. Of course it was the best decision we ever made. I don't think there is anything wrong with finding love young. In fact I am totally jealous of those who just know it's right early on in life and keep growing together instead of apart. That just wasn't in the stars for me, and I wouldn't change it.

Career // This is the one place I am very judgmental of myself. I was one of those strange kids who knew exactly what they wanted to do with their life since they were 6 years old. And guess what, photography was not it. After many years of unhappiness, at age 24 I decided I no longer wanted to do "that thing" {sorry I'm being cryptic}, took a leap of faith and started my own photography business.  It's funny looking back on, because now I can't imagine doing anything else. For years I took headshots for actors just to pay the bills, but wasn't being creative or feeling inspired. Starting this blog really gave me the confidence to stop taking headshots and start taking the kind of photographs I always wanted to. Now I literally dream about photography and feel happiest when I have a camera in my hand. Sometimes it's hard for me to accept that I didn't find my true passion until my mid twenties. I feel like if I knew sooner, I would be further along in my career, whatever that means.

Blogging // Starting a blog has been one of the best adventures of my life. It has inspired me to be a better photographer and allowed me to connect with kindred spirits. I love being part of such a creative community of people, it's what I've always dreamed of. On the other hand, the blogging world has a very false side that can make you feel jealous or less than. I sometimes compare myself, my work and my relationship to others which I know is very dangerous. I do my very best to keep that in check by reminding myself that from the outside even my life might look too good to be true.
I want you to know that I feel really blessed to have so many wonderful readers. I have had negative comments from time to time and even a twitter hater/stalker. Yes it's true. But mostly you are all so supportive and make all of this worth it.

Turning 30 // Maybe it's different in other parts of America, but in Los Angeles 30 is young. It sounds strange since we are a celebrity/youth driven culture and LA is one of the hubs, but it is. Most of my LA friends didn't start getting married or having kids until their 30's, so I never felt that pressure that so many feel. The only time I start to question my age is when I see other bloggers saying how "old" 25 is. That's when I have a Carrie Bradshaw moment {remember the episode where no one shows up to her 35th birthday and the girl at the next table is turning 25?}. Yeah, I have to laugh at myself. If the last decade has taught me anything at all, it's that life just keeps getting better and better. Thank you all for being part of it.

Happy Labor Day! So far New York has been ridiculously fun, we've eaten at many incredible restaurants, like Red Rooster, Roberta's, Prune & Lupa,  had cocktails on the roof of the Soho Housethe Wythe, saw this seriously unique show, saw these two bands play {I, II} and picnicked in central park. It doen't stop there, because today we're moving to a hotel for the next two nights in Nolita. We've been staying up in Harlem, and while I love it here, it's far away from pretty much everything we want to do.
How do you plan on spending your holiday? I'm hoping to have a pretty low-key day. I need to save up a little energy for my birthday tomorrow, right?

LATELY

Happy weekend my dears. Sorry I'm a little late at posting this. We don't have internet where we're staying, so I'm currently at an adorable cafe sipping coffee and using their free wifi. So far New York has been completely dreamy. We've been spending time with old friends, eating incredible food and soaking up the culture. I couldn't ask for a better way to ring in my thirties. Here is a little look at my life of late and a few of the sweet things making me smile...

NEW YORK CITY

Today we're headed to one of my favorite cities in the world to celebrate my 30th birthday. It has been almost two years since I was in New York and perhaps this sounds dramatic, but It's felt like something has been missing in my life. I love Los Angeles endlessly, but there is something about New York City. The energy, the style- it wakes me up from my sleepy California life {ok, it's not that sleepy}. I chose to spend my birthday there because not only does the city make me feel alive, but some of my favorite people live there. It's also where I started to fall in love with my boyfriend three years ago and for that it will always hold a special place in my heart. I'll be blogging and instagraming while I'm there, so make sure to follow me @sweetthingblog}.

There's not enough time to try all the restaurants on our list, but if you have any favorites I'd love to hear them. These are just a few I currently have bookmarked {I know it's excessive}...
ABC Kitchen | Maialino | Joseph  Leonard | Maison Premiere | Roberta's | Battersby | Hotel Delmano | Traif | Red Rooster | Marlow and Sons | Wythe Hotel | Momofuku | Gramercy Tavern | Saxon and Parole | Gemma | The Wren | Prune | Rye | Governor

CITY STYLE

1. Acne Rita Shearling Jacket $1,809
2. Wool Hat $19.99
3. Oliver Camera Strap $95
4. Leather Backpack $248
5. Rachel Comey Boots $450
6. Madewell Silk Boyshirt $110
7. Acne High Rise Jeans $200

Tomorrow we're headed to New York and this is what I fantasize wearing while I roam the city, camera in hand. It's only a dream because there's no way it will be cold enough for that amazing Acne jacket with projected temps in the 80's. Nor do I own it. Sigh.

SWEET. SWEETER. SWEETEST.

Sweet. Bugged Out $14
Sweeter. Ray Ban Round $160
Sweetest. Illesteva Frieda $260

Happy Monday my loves! I recently tried on those Illesteva Frieda's and they are pretty much perfect, but I have a hard time spending more than $150 on glasses. I guess that's why I've had the same ray ban clubmasters for 3 years. Would you wear round glasses? And if so, which pair is your favorite?

HAPPY WEEKEND

Well hello there Friday, nice to see you. Any fun plans for the weekend? As excited as I am that we are off to NYC next week, I don't feel prepared at all. I really can't believe it snuck up on us so fast. I think I'll be spending most of the weekend packing and scrambling to get everything in order for our travels. I'll also be making time to celebrate one of my best friend's rencent engagement, which has made me ridiculously happy. I'm so ready for wine and lady time.

Happy Weekend! xo

LATELY

What a week! As you may have noticed, Sweet Thing was down for over 48 hours. I'll save you the boring details, but it involved many calls to the tech support team, who ended up not being any help. I ended up finding tutorials online and on youtube that eventually helped me fix the issue myself. It's somewhat upsetting that the eight tech professionals I spoke to could not figure out the problem, but it feels so empowering that I DID.
Other than blog drama, my week was really lovely. I've been filling my time by working on a photo project that involves my father's photographs. I can't divulge the details just yet, but it feels good to working on something that will be a wonderful piece of family history. Here is a little look into my life of late and a few of the sweet things making me smile...
Happy Weekend! xo
